Federal Retirees’ president, Roy Goodall, encourages Canadians to recognize the courage and sacrifice of those who have answered the call to serve.
Every November, Canadians recognize Veterans’ Week, an opportunity to honour those who have answered the call of duty and served their country with bravery and selflessness. This year, as we mark 100 years of service for the Royal Canadian Air Force as a distinct military element, we pay special tribute to Air Force personnel and their accomplishments.
Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC) has made a multitude of free resources available to those who would like to learn more about Canadian military history. For the younger members of your family, don’t miss this opportunity to introduce them to the concept of remembrance and promote active learning. Classes, schools and community groups across the country are inviting currently serving and veteran military members to share their stories. Visit the VAC YouTube channel for short videos developed for youth audiences as well.
I encourage you to observe Remembrance Day on Nov. 11 by attending a local commemorative service or by watching the ceremony at the National War Memorial on television or online. If you watch the national ceremony, please look for one of our volunteers — Richard Chevrier, a retired member of the Canadian Armed Forces, who is one of our Prairies & NWT district directors. He will lay a wreath at the national war memorial on behalf of the Federal Retirees community.
Lest we forget.
